On March 15, 2022 Professors of the Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Foreign Languages organized the Spelling Bee competition on the subject of Vocabulary among students of 1,2,3,4 year, in which participants must spell the word, reproducing its written, dictionary form; usually tasks in spelling bee are given to participants sequentially in order of increasing difficulty.
Competitions of this kind first appeared in the United States of America. Compared to many other languages of the world, English has a difficult to learn and often inconsistent spelling – a relatively small number of phonemes are conveyed by a huge number of possible graphemes, many spellings have developed historically and do not correspond to pronunciation, so even for native speakers it is often difficult to reproduce the written form of a word perceived by ear without knowing it beforehand.
Despite such difficulties, the students of our faculty showed their best: the first place was taken by a student from group 212 Muratova Arujan, the second place was taken by Khakimova Mohida from group 308, and the third place was taken by Parakhatova Nilufar from group 311. The head of our department phd. Z. Uteshova congratulated the winners on their achievements and reminded that such a competition is very important for learning English.
